History, Staff & Governance

The History of Victoria Farmers Market at Moss Street

In 1991 a few farmers were invited to be vendors by the Fernwood Community Association at a small Saturday market they had started. It was there that Morris Lamrock, Mary Alice Johnson, Tina Fraser, Dieter Eisenhauer, and a few other farmers met.

Later that winter the group got together to explore the idea of starting a farmers market, created and directed by farmers, such as one Morris had seen in Eugene, Oregon. Morris believed Fairfield was the ideal community to welcome and support such a market. The group approached Sir James Douglas School and the Fairfield Gonzales Community Association to see if they were interested and they were.

So in May 1992 the group registered the Fairfield Community Market Society, assembled a board of four or five farmers, several crafters and food vendors, and in July started the first Moss Street Market, which became an immediate success.

What We Are Striving For

Our Values

To strengthen the foundation of healthy community by offering a safe, relaxing and enjoyable place for families and individuals to come together.

To stimulate and support our local economy by providing a venue for organic market gardeners, backyard growers, home produced food, crafts and artisans.

To create an opportunity for community groups to convey information to their neighbours concerning important local, social, political and environmental issues.

To encourage the continuing transition towards ecologically harmonious methods of food production, striving to work with, rather than against the natural system.

To have fun!
